Home Solar System

How a Home Solar System Works

A home solar system generates electricity from sunlight. Although they may look complicated, solar panels have very few moving parts and require little or no maintenance. They make no noise and no pollution – just clean, reliable electricity directly from the sun.

A Sungevity home solar system is comprised of solar panels, the racks for putting the panels on your roof, electrical wiring, and an inverter. Solar panels are mounted on your roof and wired together. During daylight hours they generate electricity and send it to your inverter where it then flows into your home to be used by your appliances.

When you install a residential solar system, your utility monitors how much power you use. If your solar system generates more electricity than you need, your system will send the extra power to your utility, crediting you for the power you created but didn't use. If you use more power than you generate (like at night, for example) you draw power from your utility as usual. Your utility will bill you based on your overall electricity consumption, automatically factoring in your solar production. This is called net metering.

Solar will increase your property value

Solar will increase a home's value in two ways — by reducing annual operating costs and adding a capital asset to your property. According to one of the leading mortgage providers in America, saving electricity adds significant value to your home, about $20 for every $1 reduction in annual utility bills. As an example, if you spent $23,000 on a Sungevity solar system today, a system this size might save you $1,200 in energy expenses in year one, immediately adding over $24,000 to the resale value of the home.

Investments in home energy efficiency have historically been valued based on how quickly the investment pays for itself. These Investments also add value to the home, which can be recovered when the house is sold. For home solar, this value often amounts to half of the homeowner’s investment after claiming all incentives and tax credits.

Millions of homeowners worldwide have gone solar with the knowledge that if they sell their solar home, they can cash in on the increased value of their property.
